The History of the Limousine
It may surprise people to learn that the history of the limousine can be traced back to the earliest days of transport, as early as the 1700’s in fact.
The first and earliest form of limousine was the wagon. The wagon master acted as the chauffeur and spent time in the front seat, and this is the concept of a chauffeured vehicle with the driver in an entirely separate compartment from their fare. The people they carried actually varied in wealth and this mode of transport was very common. It was not until much later that the higher class of wagon, horse drawn carriages, gilded in gold were introduced to cater towards the rich and famous.
The first automobile limousine was developed in 1902 and designed so the driver sat outside under a covered compartment. This gave rise to the word limousine, so called because the covered compartment physically resembled the cloak hood worn by those that resided in Limousin, a province in France that started the concept.
The first stretch limousine was created in Arkansas around 1928, namely the Lincoln and the Cadillac and in the 1930’s limousines really started to take off. The movie industry was quick to jump on board after seeing the growing popularity of the vehicle. Limousines were used to carry film crew and movie sets and movie actors and actresses also used the vehicles as a common accessory. You weren’t considered ‘it’ unless you arrived in a stretch limousine.
Today the concept of the limousine has come full circle and is no longer considered only for the rich and famous. They are designed to carry much larger numbers of people and with new technologies and many different types of vehicle available to stretch, limousines are now used for weddings, birthdays, hen nights, stag nights, school proms and even just for a night out clubbing.
